Welcome to the Better Turnout Intermediate  plan.

Are you someone who is looking to improve their turnout? Have you realised after studying ballet for a while that you may have limitation in your hips? Turnout is very complex. It’s about finding the deep rotator muscles, having enough range in your turnout and understanding the sensations and imagery required to access and utilise your turnout.

As a young student, Isabella was told she didn’t have enough turnout. She wouldn’t accept this! Isabella became the best in her class at Vaganova, defying the odds and achieving flat turnout as the highest ranked student.

You can improve your turnout. It’s a case of knowing what to do and having a plan! Get organised and improve your turnout with Isabella.

Week 1 Classes

Floor Barre Intermediate

This Class one of my favourite classes of all time. Floor Barre is something that really helped me discover my turnout. I have drawn inspiration from floor barres I have crossed paths with over the years and added my own exercises as well. Connecting with the correct muscles can be hard but this class really helps you connect with those difficult turn out muscles we all need to find. If you do this regularly, your technique will vastly improve! Turnout will get better, balance, pirouettes. That’s what we want! This class can be for all levels, though it’s best for intermediate and up. Enjoy!

This class is designed for dancers with a good level of flexibility in the hips looking to increase further getting closer towards flat turnout. We will be doing some advanced stretches to help increase range in the hips and lower leg turnout.

This class is absolutely amazing for the whole body. Targeting the muscles for turnout and beats. These include the inner thighs, deep rotators hamstrings and glutes. However as a bonus, we will also be giving you a big dose of core work. Your whole body will be challenged! You’ll come away from this class feeling more connected to your turnout as well as strong through the whole body. Get ready to sweat and feel the results!!

Hip Manifestation Stretch

Honestly this is the class we all need in our lives. it’s calm, relaxing and a total reset for body and mind. one of my favourite things to do is help you all mentally with my podcast ‘A dancer’s Mindset’ and I thought why not include the two things! Stretching and manifesting an amazing life you desire. Prepare to feel amazing with my manifestation stretch.

Psoas Course Lesson 1

Let’s Visualise and find our Psoas muscle. Because the Psoas is so deep running from your lower back all the way round to the front of your body attaching at the hip, it can be hard to find! In this lesson we will find it, learn tools to visualise it and also try to relax it preparing it to lengthen and strengthen in the following lessons. This is a great lesson to come back to when struggling to locate or relax your Psoas muscle.

This class perfect for opening up the hips as well as activating the deep turnout muscles in a really calm, meditative way. With slow strategic movements we will get into the muscles required for increased turnout, flexibility and strength. Get ready to feel how amazing your hips and turnout feel after this.

Floor Barre 2.0

Stretch and Utilise your Turnout

In this lesson, Isabella will be teaching you exercises you can do at the barre, stretches and how to really utilise your turn out. After all, even if you know all the exercises, you need to understand how to put it into practice and execute the ballet movements effectively or you won’t reach your true turnout goals.

Psoas Course – Lesson 2

Now we will be lengthening the muscle with some of my most favourite exercises. You will need a stretching band for this along with two soft balls which you can find on amazon under ‘miracle ball method’ It’s key to keep yourself as relaxed as possible in this lesson with very little tension in the muscles, focusing on length and space in the hip joints. After this, when you stand up, you should feel much more lengthened in the back, grounded in the legs, open in the hips and tall in the torso.

Week 3 Classes

Floor Barre Core

This Floor Barre class one adds a lot more abs, upper body and core work. When you do this class focus on how your abs help lead and turnout the legs. By focusing on sending your leg away from your abs your hips will instantly be much more free.

Turnout and Stretch

In this class ( part of the mat madness 14 day challenge) we go a little lighter in the intensity and focus on the deep rotator muscles as well as stretching out the hips. Deep rotator connection is subtle and hard to find which is why we have to go slow, and think deeply as we do the movements.

Turnout Course – Lesson 1

In this lesson Isabella will be taking you through many exercises for your turnout. These exercises are designed to activate the correct muscles which you need to utilise to optimise your turnout. You will need a small towel or Pilates ball for some of the exercises.

Let’s Strengthen Your Psoas

Now it’s time to strengthen your Psoas muscle. By now, you should be feeling amazing in your body and much longer. Of course we need to be strong. Working the Psoas in a functional way is key here. This allows us to keep it long even whilst we strengthen it. What we don’t want is to shorten the Psoas as we build strength as this is counter productive and will lead to inhibited turnout and poor posture. With the visualisation we have learned and these functional exercises, you will build strength whilst keeping length. This is key. Let’s get started.

Week 4 Classes

Strong Hips and Glutes

This class is perfect for building strength and stability in the hips and glutes.  Perhaps you are struggling with landing from jumps with more stability, power when you jump or simply balancing on one leg in the centre be it in adage or turns. This is an excellent class to target all of these things. Suitable for everyone!

Isabella is the youngest and first british graduate to join the vaganova ballet academy at 15 years old. Working to become top of the school. Isabella was a soloist with Mikhailovsky and Eifman ballet before returning to London and discovering her passion for teaching. Isabella founded BWI as a way for dancers globally of all levels to get the detailed vaganova training as well as conditioning they desire to take their ballet to new levels.
